All Hail the Sisters of Destruction

I am excited about Women’s wrestling in the WWE again. That was a sentence that I truly never thought that I would write after the maternity leave of Kharma but after this past week of both RAW and Smackdown, it’s something I definitely feel.

After Beth Phoenix won the Divas’ Battle Royal on RAW it was very obvious to me that the post match “hug” with Kelly Kelly was going to end in a heel turn and beat down by Beth. With that said, I didn’t mind that one bit as I’ve always felt that Beth makes a better heel than babyface anyway. (Although she does have some absolutely SMOKING hot pictures of her taken by wwe.com). The promo that followed was great too as Beth told Kelly that “the days of the perky blondes are over”.

I had almost a whole week to savour in the Beth heel turn as Smackdown began. As I watched the show it was early on that Natalya faced AJ Lee in a “student vs mentor” type match. What I saw was the best WWE Woman’s match I’ve seen since Trish Stratus left the company (the first time, not the Snookie time). The match had lockups, leg scissors and nip up counters, drop-down/leapfrog spots, and a great sharpshooter finish. The match did the Hart family proud as the match really brought me back to Davey Boy Smith and Owen Hart matches. After the match, Nattie went to pick up AJ, presumably for a handshake of respect, only to beat her down and turn heel. The post match beat down saw it spill outside of the ring, similarly to the Beth and Kelly angle from Monday. Natalya grabbed the mic and said that she agreed with Beth, the time of the perky divas in the WWE is over.

While there hasn’t been any television interaction between the two Divas as I write this (hopefully there will be), they have been publicly complimenting each other on social media outlets such as Twitter. My hope is that they can form an on-air alliance as the “Sisters of Destruction” and dominate the Divas division by beating up the “perky” divas such as AJ, Kelly Kelly, and the Bellas. They can move onto “non perky” Divas such as Tamina and Eve next before the return of should-be-babyface (no pun intended) Kharma.

Despite the recent cuts of Melina and Gail Kim, WWE still has enough Divas that can make the “Sisters of Destruction” angle work until Kharma is ready to return. Also there will be the returns of Maryse and Layla in the coming months as well in order to give Beth and Natalya fresh opponents to destroy….er face. It doesn’t hurt that Beth and Natalya are probably the two best female in ring workers in the WWE right now. I picture them as a more vicious and destructive version of Laycool or the Bellas. While those two duo-diva acts worked well for what they were, this pairing is a polar opposite dynamic and gives a fresh new look to the divas division. While Kharma was set to go down a similar path of conquering, the fact that this is two Divas gives a lot more options for stories, such as interference and double teams.

The payoff for me is what I am most excited about and it is twofold. While I will enjoy seeing the “Barbies” destroyed by the two best female workers in the company, when the time comes for Kharma to return and stand up to the Divas bullies those matches should be fantastic. Kharma versus either Beth or Natalya is something that I am looking very forward to seeing. I can also picture a tag match where Kharma has to go out and get a partner…..TRISH STRATUS. Trish is in the good graces of the company off her Tough Enough training role and would be someone who would fit right in with the work rate of the other three divas.

Finally, the second payoff…..The Split. Nothing lasts forever (even cold November Rain) and when the time comes to split the Sisters, those matches should be tremendous for two reasons. Not only are they great workers so the matches will be fantastic to watch, but the fans should be invested enough by this time (as long as they don’t burn through it…see Punk, CM) that the crowd heat should be equally as hot.

The WWE has really done themselves a favor with their latest two Diva heel turns. I am very hopeful that this will lead to a long, healthy run for the Sisters of Destruction as it is something that I am very interested in following.
